The whole affair revolves around a mad, unappreciated scientist, Dr. Mafune, and his
daughter Katsuro. After many years of research, Mafune stumbles upon a trace of the
prehistoric scumbag—Titanosaurus. He also learns how to control him. Meanwhile, space
invaders known to us from the previous movie fish out the wreck of Mechagodzilla from
the bottom of the sea; they now need help with activating this heap of iron. Mafune
agrees to collaborate, especially after the strangers rescue his daughter from an
lab accident. Now they have two monsters able to defeat Godzilla. Behind the
controls of the giants is Katsuro, her life sustained artificially by charlatanish
practices of the invaders. Godzilla’s chances are slim, but here enters the “human
factor.” Titanosaurus is rendered harmless by ultrasound, and a young paleontologist,
who’s fallen in love with Katsuro, enters the invaders’ base to speak to her heart.
The strangers’ headquarters are destroyed, Katsuro dies because she has to, her
daddy, who regrets everything, dies too, and Godzilla takes care of the rest...
For the first time in six years, Ishiro Honda took his place behind the camera to
make a Godzilla movie. It was a farewell to this particular genre format and its
entire personnel. Terror Of Mechagodzilla closes the cycle which has begun in 1954
with Godzilla, King of the Monsters.
Many things have changed since. Serious cinema
gave way to a simple comic-book aesthetic, and Godzilla himself became much more
friendly. This cult monster has been transformed into a toddler’s mascot—a symbol of
goodness and strength.
Godzilla will return again under the colors of Toho. The following series of the
monster’s adventures will be realized by the next generation of filmmakers. Everything
will start all over again when the monster emerges out of the ocean in 1984 and begins
to spread panic and destruction (deja vu).
* These monsters appear in a brief flashback sequence.
